Ten members of the Shorty Powers Composite Squadron marked the Fourth of July by participating in the annual Downers Grove Independence Day parade.
Under the command of Deputy Commander for Cadets Lt. Col. Gary Gross, nine cadets marched in the parade. Cadets Gilbert Redman-Ernst and Joe D'Argento lead off the group carrying the squadron banner. Cadets Nixon Flores and Alex Najera carried the U.S. and the squadron flags respectively, flanked by rifle bearers Cadet Robert Flores and Cadet Anthony Cozeck. They were followed by Cadets Daniel Murphy, Khatib Suhayl and Kaylan Duncan marching in formation.
The team was the only color guard in the parade which otherwise consisted of roaring fire trucks and police motorcycles, stylish classic and antique vehicles, political candidates and homemade floats.
Afterward, the cadets visited with local residents who wanted to learn more about Civil Air Patrol and the squadron.
Lt. Col. Gross thanks all of the cadets who marched in the parade on Saturday, the CAP senior members that helped in so many ways and the parents that supported this activity by providing the cadets with transportation, personal support and encouragement. We couldn't have done this without you. Special thanks go to Jim Kolton, Carol D'Argento and Tom Verdone.
