SPCS Helps Out At 10th Annual Cavalcade of Planes

Four Illinois Wing CAP squadrons volunteered over 740 hours at the 10th annual Cavalcade of Planes at Clow International Airport, Bolingbrook Illinois on June 6th and 7th. The event drew a crowd of over 8000 visitors.

Joe DePaulo, the Clow airport manager said, "In June of every year, we host our Cavalcade of Planes, attracting thousands of aviation enthusiasts who are treated to displays of historic aircraft, museum exhibits, food and entertainment, flyovers, rides in experimental aircraft, and a lot of great fun."

The CAP volunteers were tasked with parking cars, crowd control, flight line safety, operating the CAP information booth, grounds maintenance and staffing the CAP Cessna 182 display. While working the show some cadets were also involved in securing a pair of ELTs on aircraft that came in for the event.

Major James Bartel of Shorty Powers Composite Squadron served as project officer for the event. He was assisted by Major Virginia Kurasch, commander of the Lewis Composite Squadron, Captains Dan and Sue Wynard also of Lewis, and Major Brian Cramer of Group 2. Over 60 CAP members from SPCS, Lewis Composite, Lincoln Way Composite and Midway Composite squadrons participated. The number of CAP volunteers exceeded the man power that was anticipated. Joe DePaulo commented that they initially ran out of hot dogs to feed the volunteers.

SPCS helps out at this event because The Illinois Avaition Museum, one of the tenents at the airport, hosts us. IAM provides the use of two classrooms, storage space and outside space for inspection and drill practice. The IAM facility is 6000 square feet and also is home to aircraft displays and a number of activities and programs.
